1. Mastering the Turn-Based Action Economy (GreenCircle vs Orange Triangle)
Every combat turn grants each party member three core resources: Movement Speed (typically 9m/30ft), one Action (Green Circle, used for primary weapon attacks, cantrips, and major spells), and one Bonus Action (Orange Triangle, used for jumping, shoving, drinking potions, dipping weapons in fire, or off-hand attacks). Winning outnumbered fights comes down to never ending a turn with an unused Bonus Action.
2. Stacking Advantage & High Ground (+2 Attack Roll Math)
When you have "Advantage" on an attack, the game rolls two 20-sided dice (2d20) behind the scenes and keeps the higher result—statistically equivalent to roughly a +4 to +5 accuracy boost while doubling your Critical Hit chance from 5% to 9.75%. Gain instant Advantage on ranged attacks by taking High Ground (at least 2.5 meters above the target for a flat +2 bonus), attacking from stealth/shadows, or knocking an enemy Prone with Grease, Ice, or Battle Master Trip Attack.
3. The Concentration Rule: Never Overwrite Your Own Buffs
Many of the strongest spells in Baldur’s Gate 3—including Bless, Haste, Hold Person, Spirit Guardians, and Hex—carry the "Concentration" tag at the bottom of their tooltip. A spellcaster can only maintain ONE Concentration spell at a time. Casting Hex while you are already concentrating on Hold Person immediately cancels Hold Person! Always check the small circular icon beneath your character portrait before casting a second buff or control spell.
4. Balanced 4-Character Party Composition for Act 1
For your first campaign, configure a balanced quartet covering all four tactical roles: (1) Frontline Martial Striker (Lae’zel as Battle Master Fighter or Karlach as Berserker Barbarian), (2) Support & Radiant Control (Shadowheart respec’d at Withers to Light or Tempest Domain Cleric with 14 Dexterity and 16 Constitution), (3) Sleight of Hand & Ranged Burst (Astarion as Thief or Assassin Rogue), and (4) Area-of-Effect Arcane Caster (Gale as Evocation Wizard, whose Sculpt Spells passive prevents Fireball from hurting your own teammates).
