1. Customizing Your Starting Stat Spread (4-4-2-2 Recommended)
In Disco Elysium, your four base attributes (Intellect, Psyche, Physique, Motorics) set both the starting level and the learning cap for all 24 skills. Importantly, Endurance (Physique) equals your Health bar and Volition (Psyche) equals your Morale bar. Starting with 1 Physique or 1 Psyche leaves you with only 1 HP or 1 Morale, meaning turning on a harsh lightbulb or sitting in an uncomfortable chair can trigger an instant game over. A 4 Intellect / 4 Psyche / 2 Physique / 2 Motorics custom spread gives you the best balance of detective deduction, empathy, and survivability.
2. Top Tier Skills: Encyclopedia, Inland Empire, Visual Calculus & Volition
While every skill adds unique flavor dialogue, four skills carry huge investigative weight across Martinaise. Visual Calculus reconstructs bullet trajectories and footprints at crime scenes; Volition acts as your voice of sanity and protects your Morale; Empathy lets you read Lieutenant Kim Kitsuragi and nervous witnesses; and Shivers/Inland Empire tune your intuition into the paranormal history of Revachol.
3. White Checks vs Red Checks & Clothing Swapping
White Skill Checks can be retried whenever you put a point into that skill or discover new context clues through dialogue. Before clicking a White Check, open your inventory and equip clothing items (hats, glasses, jackets, shoes) that boost that specific stat—you can change clothes freely mid-conversation right before rolling the dice.
4. Must-Have Thought CabinetUnlocks: Jamais Vu & Fifteenth Indotribe
Internalize "Jamais Vu (Derealization)" after speaking with Joyce Messier about the Pale to earn +1 XP every time you click an orb in the environment, and internalize "The Fifteenth Indotribe" to earn +0.10 Réal every time a passive Greed/Savoir Faire check fires.
