1. Reading 60 FPS Frame Data: Startup, Block Advantage & i10–i15 Tiers
Tekken 8 runs locked at 60 frames per second (1 frame = 16.67ms). The fastest standing jab in the game takes 10 frames of startup ("i10"). Therefore, if an opponent’s attack leaves them at -9 or higher on block (e.g., -5 or +2), the move is "Safe"—you can block, but no attack is fast enough to hit them before their guard recovers. If a move is -10 to -11 on block, punish with your character’s i10 jab string; at -12 to -14, use your mid power punish; at -15 or worse ("Launch Punishable"), execute your i15 Hopkick (uf+4) or df+2 launcher for a 70+ damage juggle combo.
2. Heat Burst vs. Heat Engager Frame Advantage (+2 vs +17)
Every round grants one activation of the Heat gauge. Activating Heat manually via the neutral Heat Burst bound button provides armored startup and leaves you only +2 on hit and +1 on block. In contrast, landing one of your character’s five designated "Heat Engager" moves forces your character to sprint forward automatically into the opponent’s face at a massive +17 frame advantage—guaranteeing an uninterruptible 50/50 mixup between a launching mid and a high-damage low.
3. 3D Lateral Movement: Sidestep Left (SSL) vs. Sidestep Right (SSR)
Unlike 2D fighters, Tekken 8 allows you to step into the foreground or background (tap Up or Down, then release) to make linear attacks whiff completely into thin air. Never sidestep while you are worse than -5 on block, as the opponent’s next attack will clip your startup frames. Instead, perform a jab (1 on block is +1) or df+1 (typically -1 to -3 on block) and immediately sidestep toward the opponent’s weak side (e.g., Sidestep Left against Kazuya and Jin’s Electric Wind God Fist) before launching their whiffed recovery.
